Our Focus

Protecting the Last Remaining L.A. Riverfront Open Space
in San Fernando Valley

Save L.A. River Open Space is working hard to create the Los Angeles River Natural Park, focused on capturing runoff water and protecting water quality on the last remaining unprotected open space for 22 miles along the Los Angeles River in the San Fernando Valley. Join us, and help us preserve this irreplaceable open space before it is too late! This land is an irreplaceable link in the 51-mile Los Angeles River Greenway and should be an L.A. River-oriented natural area in the heart of our urbanized valley – but proposed development of 200 high-rise condominiums and 625 parking spaces threaten this unique property.

For over 50 years, this beautiful place has been a regional recreation destination. Today, you can visit this site, benefit from it’s recreational amenities, or simply enjoy the tall shady trees on a hot summer day. It is widely known as Weddington Golf and Tennis, formerly known as Studio City Golf and Tennis.

But tomorrow, this unique green oasis along the L.A. River could disappear - forever.
L.A. River Natural Park Vision

Site Vision Plan

Click to go to Site Vision.

Our vision for this unique 16-acre open space along the L.A. River is the L.A. River Natural Park, a natural, river-oriented park that integrates the L.A. River, habitat restoration, regional public access, open space and natural runoff treatment to improve water quality. This cutting-edge vision aims to help carry out the L.A. City Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan and the L.A. County Los Angeles River Master Plan, and recognizes and protects the site’s unique regional significance by:

  • Preserving and enhancing public access and connections to the L.A. River
  • Improving water quality through natural treatment of urban runoff
  • Restoring native habitat and preserving precious open space
  • Preserving historic recreational uses of golf and tennis
  • Emphasizing pedestrian and bicycle access and links to public transit
  • Addressing regional and community needs and concerns

Save L.A. River Open Space worked with Community Conservancy International, BlueGreen Consulting, Geosyntec and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy to develop this vision and concept plan.

Improving Water Quality and Flood Control

Ballona Creek   Red Beach

The L.A. River Natural Park Vision will play a very important role in assisting the region in meeting water quality improvement goals for the L.A. River, San Pedro Bay, beaches and coastal waters and in providing valuable flood control benefits. Today, runoff from homes, landscaping, businesses and streets carrying fertilizers, pesticides and other harmful pollutants flows directly into the L.A. River without treatment of any kind. Using cutting-edge “green” technologies, the L.A. River Natural Park will capture and use soils and plants to naturally filter and clean polluted runoff from surrounding neighborhoods – helping to protect our precious rivers and ocean - and helping to prevent flooding at the same time.

More About Save L.A. River Open Space
We are a non-profit organization working with the Studio City Residents Association, area leaders and regional organizations to protect critical open space in the Studio City and surrounding areas of the San Fernando Valley. We are dedicated to protecting our environment and to partnering with regional community, civic and conservation groups to protect the precious open space resources of the L.A. River. We have fought for many years to protect this precious property, because we know that once it is lost, it can never be replaced. The Studio City area has over 40,000 residents, and has seen traffic and congestion steadily worsen. We know that green open space, mature trees and clean water are of paramount importance to us and to the region – not more development in an already over-built area with very few open space resources.
