CHEMICALS

WHAT IS PFAS?
Our city has a critical chance to ban PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances), a class of toxic chemicals that never break down in the environment.
HOW ARE WE EXPOSED TO IT?
Used in
-
Artificial Grass (Two new plastic fields expected at Harvard-Westlake's River Park)
-
nonstick cookware
-
waterproof clothing
-
and firefighting foam
WHAT ARE THE HEALTH RISKS?
PFAS have been linked to serious health risks, including:
-
Birth Defects (Emory University 2023 study)
-
Cancer (Harvard, Univ. San Francisco, USC, Michigan 2023 study)
-
Infertility (Icahn School of Medicine, Mt. Sinai 2023 study)
-
Obesity (Univ Rhode Island 2023 study)
-
Liver damage (Univ of Michigan 2024 study)
-
Thyroid disorders (Istituti Scientifici Maugeri IRCCS Pavia, Italy 2021 study)
These chemicals accumulate in our water, soil, and even our bodies, with studies showing PFAS contamination in nearly every American’s bloodstream.
